Most Famous Visual Artists (who happen to be women)

Most Famous visual artists Laurence de Valmy

Google is a mirror of our society and the search “most famous visuals artists” delivers only 6 women out of 51 artists, perpetuating and reinforcing the existing gender stereotypes.

Laurence de Valmy created MOST FAMOUS VISUAL ARTISTS a collection of 54 NFTs featuring 54 women artists from different centuries and continents, each represented by a flower, a traditional symbol of femininity in art.

She diverted the eye-catching rainbow artwork from Takashi Murakami who recently released his Murakami.Flowers NFTs. Valmy associated flowers with the last names of women artists, consciously omitting their first names, to elevate them up to “brands” such as Picasso or Warhol.

Indeed, a study from Cornwell University found that people were more than twice as likely to call male professionals by their last name only, compared to equivalent female professionals. This example of gender bias, say researchers, may be contributing to gender inequality.

Each flower is personalized for each artist, making references to their style, life and artworks. Her goal is to raise awareness about the gender gap in our societies and how we need to rewrite history.
